The Standard’s film reviewer pens his thoughts on the latest in the superhero franchise.

With the summer season officially ignited, our resident film expert Gavin Miller gives you the lowdown on blockbusters to watch out for in May.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past (May 22) – Director Bryan Singer returns to helm the ultimate ensemble as the stars of First Class join forces with veterans of the first trilogy.

Magneto and Professor X (Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart) come face-to-face with their younger selves, with Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine. Throw in Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and new characters like Omar Sy’s Bishop for one of the biggest film’s of the summer.

Godzilla (May 15)–The world’s most famous monster gets a second recent stab at the big screen – after the embarrassing 1998 Matthew Broderick effort – in this big-budget epic action adventure from up-and-coming director Gareth Edwards (Monsters).

Kick-Ass’ Aaron Taylor-Johnson, soon-to-play Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Elizabeth Olsen, and Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston headline an all-star cast.

Maleficent (May 28)– Angelina Jolie stars as one of Disney’s most iconic villains in this untold tale from the classic Sleeping Beauty – the latest film from the House of Mouse to receive the big-budget treatment.

Driven by revenge, the evil fairy cruelly places a curse on the human king’s newborn infant princess Aurora (Super 8’s Elle Fanning), but soon realises the child may be the only one who can restore peace.
