Spalding v Skegness Cricket

Readers ECB Lincolnshire Premier League

Spalding 251 for 4

Skegness 190 for 9

Two partnerships of over 100 put Skegness on the back foot at newly promoted Spalding.

Warren Nel hit eight fours and two sixes in his partnership with Josh Newton as the home side recovered from a shaky start. Then Zimbabwean Campbell Light and Tim Norris put on 105 to take Spalding to 251 for four.

In response, Skegness lost Ricky Lovelace and Pete Houghton with only nine runs on the board.

Dan Milgate then set about rebuilding their innings until his skipper Richie Hewitt sent him back in midflow and he was run out.

Hewitt lost Sean Chamberlain and Jarrad Hoskin and any hopes he had of building a partnership with the injured Paul Butler were dashed when he was stumped by his opposite number, Rob Ambrose.

Butler, batting with a runner, yet again held things together for the seasiders. But there was last ball drama to come.

Having put on 59 with Sean Williams, Butler appeared to have rescued the day, but in the penultimate ball of the innings, Williams was bowled by Charlie Kearns.

All eyes turned to teenager and number 11 bat Mikey Forman who needed to survive the final ball to retain their three points for the draw. The youngster held his nerve and Skegness returned home with a total of seven points in the bag.

Helped by top scorer ‘Extras’, this was enough for them to hold on to fourth place in a very competitive league.

“Things are very tight in the league this year and there are no easy games,” said Skegness skipper Hewitt after the match,

Next up is Grimsby at home on Saturday (12.30pm start).
