Sleight’s double strike helps share the spoils

Pre-season friendly

Skegness Town 2

Southwell St Marys 2

TWO goals from Sam Sleight were enough to secure a draw in Skegness Town’s pre-season friendly against Southwell St Marys.

Champions of their division in the Notts senior league, St Marys provided a tough test for the new look Lilywhites.

Indeed, they took the lead midway through the first half when they were awarded a penalty.

Town keeper Michael Emery saved Danny Garratt’s spot kick, but was unable to do anything with the follow up shot from point blank range.

Sleight scored the first of his two goals after 30 minutes, a sweetly struck shot from the angle of the penalty area, before Stevie Lester capitalised on a defensive error to give the visitors a 2-1 half time lead.

After the break, Skegness upped the tempo and deservedly equalised in the 70th minute when Sleight swept home a direct free kick into the top corner of the St Marys net.

On Saturday, Skegness will be at home to Sileby Town from the Leicestershire senior league, with a 3pm kick off.
