Skegness continue good start to season

Lincolnshire ECB Premier League

Hartsholme 128 all out

Skegness 129 for two

Skegness (20pts) beat Hartsholme (1pt) by eight wickets

Skegness continued their bright start to the season with another maximum points haul at Hartsholme.

Saeed Bariwala showed he is still one of the best all-rounders in the league with four wickets and 45 runs as the seasiders brushed aside the challenge of a youthful Hartsholme at Ashby Avenue.

Such was their dominance that they clinched the 20 points by batting for less than half of their overs in response to the home side’s paltry 128.

The Lincoln side had got off to a solid start, reaching 31 before losing Louis Kimber, leg before to Sean Williams.

But both the spin of Bariwala and the swing of Paul Butler reduced them to 82 for six. The ball from Butler that disturbed skipper Henry Rush’s stumps was an absolute peach.

Hartsholme continued to stumble and they had barely reached three figures when the last pair Mike Arundall and Paul Sheppard came together in the middle.

Their partnership of 25, the second highest of the innings, netted them one batting point, but 28 ‘Extras’ was by far Hartsholme’s top scorer.

Bariwala bowled 17 overs and was kicking himself for not grabbing a second caught and bowled to earn him his first ‘five-for’ of the season.

Hartsholme used six bowlers in search of a breakthrough but openers Bariwala and Ricky Lovelace performed solidly. A couple of chances off Martin Shillito did go down and Lovelace rode his luck when he skied a simple chance to square leg that slipped through the fingers of a galloping fielder.

It looked as though the opening pair was going to get the seasiders over the line, but a loose shot from Bariwala gifted Michael Hale with a catch in the gully.

Still smarting from his duck the previous week, Pete Houghton set about the tiring Hartsholme bowlers and then, with the scores level, perished to a run out. He was sent back by Lovelace, who had just made his first 50 for the club.

This resulted in overseas player Jarrod Hoskin being called to the crease. The lively Kiwi Richard Genge was brought back, presumably to try and squeeze out a bowling point.

Hoskin survived the first four balls and then gratefully accepted the gift of a wide to seal the victory.
