Six Skegness Coasters battled with the elements when they competed in the prestigious half marathon event, the BUPA Great North Run recently.
During the event, Neil Mitchell, Nathan Fisher, Martina Honour and Helena Shelton all gained personal best times despite the lashing rain and winds of up to 45 miles/hour.
Craig Tarrant and Mark Harvey showed great team spirit by staying with Nathan through the entirety of the run, ensuring his PB despite being plagued with injury in recent months.
Helena said: “As Manager of Eresby Hall Care Home in Spilsby, when I got a ballot place for the Great North I decided to use it to raise funds towards the long overdue upgrade of the residents’ hairdressing salon. I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me and overall so far I have raised £340.
“It was an amazing experience and the support from the crowd and other fellow members of the Skegness Coasters was overwhelming. All the residents and their families and friends alongside the staff from Eresby showed a lot of support and on the morning of the run many residents watched it on TV trying to see if they could spot me out of the 58,000 runners. I loved it, despite the rain.”
Nathan was running on behalf of The Marie Curie Cancer Care Trust, Craig for the RNLI, Martina for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Helena for Eresby Hall.
