SKEGNESS Cricket Club is this week celebrating the news that they have escaped relegation from the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League.
Despite finishing in the bottom two, the seasiders avoided the drop because of Billingborough’s lack of junior teams.
Billingborough had won the South Lincs and Border League and had applied for promotion into the ECB.
But, while their junior section is growing, they were unable to confirm that they were in a position to form all the necessary teams.
For Lincolnshire to be accredited as a Premier League, the ECB stipulates that member clubs must have sides at Under 11, 13 and 15 playing in recognised junior leagues.
At the Annual General Meeting Haxey were accepted back into the top flight after a three year absence, at the expense of bottom club Nettleham, who slipped back into the Lincolnshire County Cricket League.
Elsewhere, two Skegness batsmen have finished in the top six of the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League runmakers.
Despite playing for a side who finished second to bottom, Wade McCall and Pete Houghton scored nearly 1,500 runs between them during the 2011 season.
Captain McCall finished fourth, notching 757 runs in 21 innings, with a top score of 151 not out on the last day of the season against Market Deeping, while opener Houghton made 738 from 20 innings to finish sixth highest.
His top score was 147, with an average of 38.84.
Skegness wicket keeper Carl Wilson also had a successful season with the bat, making 506 runs at an average of 33.73.
Meanwhile, the club’s fixtures for next year have been announced and Skegness will face a tough start to its 2012 calendar.
Three of last summer’s top five teams – Bourne, Grimsby and champions Bracebridge Heath – will cross swords with the seasiders in the opening four weeks.
