OVER 3,000 visitors flocked to Skegness’s first ever Footvolley Championship at the weekend.
Teams from Andorra, Austria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Holland, Norway, Portugal and Spain all took part in the East Lindsey Live event.
Organised by East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) in association with UK Footvolley, the two day tournament took place on Skegness’s Central Beach where an estimated 3,000 spectators came along to watch over the two days.
Footvolley is a cross between Beach Volleyball and Football, with teams of two players battling it out in three set matches.
Portugal were crowned European Champions for 2012.
Portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism at ELDC, Cllr Adam Grist, said: “Footvolley is a relatively new sport to the UK and one which is growing fast.
“As part of our plan to develop the economy in the area we’re working hard to bring new events and activities to attract new people. I am delighted that teams not just from the UK but from across Europe took part.
“As well as being good for tourism and the profile of our area, tournaments like this bring in some of the best players, who can inspire local people.”
The next beach sports competition is Beach Rounders, which will be taking place this Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11 on Central Beach, Skegness.
