Skegness Tri club member Alan Wheeler took on the challenge of the Alpe D’Huez Triathlon -and said that this was his biggest challenge to date.
Despite finishing two Iron Man events, Alan admitted this was his toughest event so far.
The race began with a 2.2km swim in the crystal blue waters of Lac du Verney in the French Alps.
This was followed by a gruelling 120km bike stage, which included three mountain passes, the final 12km being up the notorious climb at Alpe D’Huez with its legendary 21 hairpins.
Alan’s final challenge on this blazing hot day was a 21km run at the top of the mountain, a mixture of tarmac and off-road running which took a toll on already-tired legs.
Alan finished 372nd out of 761 competitors in a time of 8 hrs 51 mins.
An amazing achievement especially as the race was so gruelling 85 competitors did not make it to the finishing line.
