English National Cadet Masters Champion Tom Jarvis was unable to complete the double when he fell short at the National Junior Masters at Grantham College over the weekend.
The 14-year-old Skegness student had emerged triumphant in the under-15s category a week earlier at Burton Uxbridge, but could only match his ranking of seventh place in the under-18s category after two days of high-calibre table tennis.
Playing against opponents four years his senior, Jarvis endured a difficult start in Grantham, winning just twice out of his six matches on the opening day after facing all of the top six ranked juniors in England.
He began well with a tight 3-2 victory over number foure seed Sam Mabey (Np) and cemented this by comfortably dispatching number three Adam Harrison 3-0.
But the rest of the day was a battle for the young international after suffering defeats to Helshan Weerasinghe (ranked number one), Igor Morais (two), Daniel Lawrence (five) and Jared Patel (six).
Despite the setbacks on day one, the Skegness cadet began the second day positively with three consecutive victories over Joseph Langham-Ferreira, Alec Ward and Gabriel Achampong.
Although he ended with defeats to defender Jamie Trevillion, who also upset the eventual Champion Weerasinghe, and Marcus Giles, his seventh-placed finish was a credible performance from the youngest player at the event.
England’s top cadet will now look forward to international duty at the Czech Junior and Cadet Open (February 12-15) before taking on the best in the country at the Senior National Championships (February 28 to March 2).
