Skegness left stumped by Boston’s final flourish

SKEGNESS lost out to Boston in the Men’s National Inter Club Championship, the Denny Cup.

For the first 15 ends the match was evenly poised, but despite a good rink win for Jim Orton’s set (by 12 shots) Boston eased away over the last five ends to record an aggregate 17 shot victory.

Skegness now faces Sleaford in the plate competition for first round losers on Saturday (November 5) at 10am.

The following day it was the turn of the mixed team in the National Egham Trophy. After a poor start against Grantham Bryn Foxon’s rink battled back from a 12 shot deficit to make a final total of 84-67. Long Sutton are up next this Sunday (November 6) at 10am.

In the national over 50s triples King John, Sir George and Captain Brian squeezed a tight victory over Alex Mullin’s Scunthorpe trio 17-14.

In the under 18 club singles Paul Oke beat Jonathon Coppings 21-8.

The Ladies’ Trudy Bates team visited Sleaford. Rink wins for Mary Reding and Alice Salmon meant Skegness collected four points but in a tense finish Sleaford gained overall victory with a final score of 99-92.

The Men’s over 60s B team travelled to Spalding. In another close finish Skegness just failed to secure the aggregate points, going down 78-82 despite rink wins for Bill Bateman (17-14), John Clarke (17-11) and Ray Houlgrave (17-14). The final score was Spalding 12, Skegness 6.

Result of the week in the club leagues was Bolton’s victory over previously unbeaten Spurs 28-5.
