A teenage cable ski champion from Skegness has leapt up the European rankings after a personal best performance in Poland earlier this month.

British under 15s slalom cable champion, Richard Charles, has moved from 11th to sixth following his success at the European championships held at Lake Szczecinek.

“Travelling to Szczecinek in Poland was a fantastic place to experience competitive sport in a stunning natural location,” said Richard.

“I am very happy with my performance in Poland and am looking forward to the national champions later this month.

“The pressure is on to defend my national title.”

Competing against 12 European teams in difficult conditions, with strong winds, choppy waters and high temperatures. Richard managed to set a new personal best of five buoys at 55km/h.

The event, held over three days between September 6 and 8, featured the longest ski cable in Europe, with a circuit of more than 2,200 metres in length.

Richard, who trains at the Skegness Wakeboard and Water Ski Park at the Water Leisure Park in Ingoldmells, is now preparing to defend his national under 15s title at the Liquid Leisure Ski Park in Windsor later this month.

“This will be a critical challenge for Richard before he moves to the 15 - 19 age group for the 2014 season,” said Richard’s father Paul Charles.
