Skegness 2nds 21, Barton 46
Lincolnshire Merit League
The Skegness second team opened their account in the Lincolnshire Merit League against a strong Barton side at Wainfleet Road Playing Fields at the weekend.
After conceding points within the first minutes of play Skegness battled back in admirable fashion to take the lead 14-7 just before half-time.
However Barton, after sustained pressure which the home side looked to have soaked up, scored twice to take the lead at half-time.
The second half saw a full-on physical battle result in Barton running in a series of tries and running out deserved winners 21-46.
The Blue and Whites battled admirably with a new squad consisting of both young and old.
Skipper Andy Hill and vice captain Ant Spiers were delighted with the performance and resilience shown by all. Debutants Rhys Thompson and Joe Clarke shone and showed huge promise for the future, while stalwarts Taylor, Turner, Lancaster, Hotchen and Machin showed resilience and fight expected by players of such stature.
“All at Skegness RUFC would like to thank and send their best wishes for the future to Alex Schofield and Luke Wilkinson who leave the town to attend University,” said a spokesperson. “They have been respected members of the rugby club and shall be missed.
“The performance, even though resulting in a loss, showed great promise for both the team and Skegness Rugby Club,” they added.
