Alford win tussle of table-toppers

Alford Ladies 1st XI 4,

Lincoln Ladies 2nd XI 2

IT was Alford who came out smiling after this hard-fought top of the table clash at home to Lincoln.

Lincoln started brightly and immediately piled pressure on the home team’s defence.

But with Lincoln looking the more likely to score Alford broke away and a strong cross found young Vicky Allen who pushed the ball over the line to break the deadlock.

Alford reorganised their marking and settled into their play. Lincoln continued to pile on the pressure to try and find the equaliser but Alford’s defence stayed determined.

Helen Gray and Nikii Hind were clearing their lines at the back and there was some excellent midfield play from Tracy Le’Gate and Luan Burton to knit the defence & attack together.

Luan strolled through the Lincoln defence and struck the ball past the stranded keeper for Alford’s second.

Captain Kelly Tuplin looked as if she had increased Alford’s lead when a well-struck short corner was saved by the Lincoln keeper.

However Tracy Le’Gate’s powerful strike was too strong and Alford increased the score to 3-0 – a score that didn’t reflect Lincoln’s effort.

Alford’s lead was short lived when Lincoln forced a short corner. Their striker’s powerful shot at goal was too strong for the Alford defence and the visitors were rewarded for some of their excellent play.

Within minutes Lincoln had increased their goal tally when they were awarded another short corner. The Alford defence were all following the ball and Lincoln worked the short corner through the D and into an unmarked goal, to take the score to 3-2.

Alford determined not to let their lead slip and, with Lincoln breathing down their necks, pushed forward to try and widen the gap. Their efforts were repaid when Jess Wood converted on the post to finish the game at 4-2.

A club spokesperson said: “This was a hard fought game with some excellent play from both teams resulting in Alford’s defence and midfield having to work hard and dig deep, with great performances from Becky Murray, Tracy Le’Gate and Nikii Hind, however man of the match went to Luan Burton.”

Alford: Carole Jacklin, Helen Gray, Nikii Hind, Becky Murray, Holly Boulton, Tracy Le’Gate, Luan Burton, Vicky Allen, Rachel Hickson, Kelly Tuplin & Jess Wood.
