Long Sutton Ladies 1st 1 - 1 Alford Ladies 1st

Alford travelled to Long Sutton for their second successive away match in Division 2NW.

Knowing that Long Sutton had played in Division One last season, Alford expected stiff competition.

Long Sutton didn’t disappoint and stared the game with a fast tempo enjoying several attacks on the Alford goal. Alfords defence, consisting of Nikii Hind, Kate Murray, Sophie Wood and Kelly Le’Gate, stood firm and halted any home team advances and prevented them taking an early lead.

Alford were struggling to get a hold in the game and attacks into the Long Sutton final 25 were few and far between.

With 20 minutes played, Long Sutton got their just rewards when a counter attack down the right hand side saw the ball played into the D for their attacker to slot the ball past Alford’s Goalkeeper.

A determined Alford desperately tried to draw level before the end of the first half and the ladies were rewarded when Alford’s Meg Murray pushed a ball out of defence to winger Vic Allen, who cut into the D and played the ball to the far post where Rachael Hickson tapped the ball over the goal line.

Whilst Alford enjoyed numerous attacks in the second half, with short corners and shots on goal, the Sutton keeper, Lorraine Wallis was equal to them and Alford could find no way through.

With the game looking likely to end all square, Alford suddenly found their hearts in their mouths when a hit out of defence was intercepted by the Sutton centre forward and with only the keeper to beat looked certain to take all three points, however keeper Jacklin stood her ground, and the Long Sutton forward shot wide of the post.
Alford were relieved to hear the final whistle, sharing the honours with Long Sutton after a tough game and a well earned point.
