SPORTING organisations are a step closer to enjoying improved training facilities and later competitive matches after a £50,000 floodlights application was supported by Skegness Town Council.
The council’s planning committee voted in favour of the application submitted by Skgness Rugby Club to build eight floodlights at the War Memorial Playing Fields, Wainfleet Road, on Tuesday.
Club secretary Andy Hill said: “This would be the first floodlit grassed area in Skegness and will create great opportunities for a wide range of sporting organisations.”
The project has been made possible after the club raised £10,000 through special events and generous donations from local business and a further £40,000 in contributions from the Rugby Football Union.
If the application is approved by East Lindsey District Council the floodlights would enable the Rugby Club to host midweek competitive matches throughout the winter.
Other sporting clubs would also benefit from improved evening training facilities.
