Skegness United 3 v 4 CGB Humbertherm

Skegness United were playing their first group match in this season’s Supplementary Cup Competition with the other side in the group being Sleaford Town Reserves.

Arron Scutt and Kurt Crossley returned to the starting line up. John Courtney made his first start since his welcome return to the club.

United made the worst possible start by going behind in the second minute with some woeful defending.

After Scutt lost the ball inside the visitors’ half, the ball was played over the United defence and Mansell miscued allowing Jack Barley to run through on goal and as Chris Snaith came of his line he placed a delicate chip over him into the net.

On 25 minutes Humbertherm increased their lead when Joe Burns chased a long ball on the left and his powerful shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line.

United got themselves back into the game on 27 minutes when a stunning strike by Courtney from outside the box left Harrison routed to the spot.

Within the first minute of the second half United came close to drawing level when play between Scutt, Luke Rayner-Mistry and O’Loughlin played in Courtney whose clever shot clipped the top of the bar.

However, the visitors increased their lead on the break again when Burns broke down the left and when Snaith came out to cut down the angel fired across him into the far corner.

United again got themselves back into the game within a minute when Rhys Mansell played in Rayner-Mistry who fired across Harrison into the corner.

Within two minutes the home side should have been level when O’Loughlin sent over a cross which found Crossley in a great position but he fired over the bar from six yards.

On 60 minutes United finally drew level when Scutt played the ball out to Courtney who turned the fullback inside out before delivering an inch perfect cross that was headed home by Crossley to draw the side’s level.

At this point it was all United as they went in search of a winner.

However, eight minutes later Humbertherm went back in front when Jack Barley’s attempted cross looped into the far corner.

On 70 minutes United had a chance to draw level when a cross from Rayner-Mistry should have been headed home by Crossley, however he did not get a clear connection.

At the final whistle the visitors claimed the three points in the group.

United’s next group match is at Sleaford on October 4.

Manager Mark Hallam said: “Defensively as a team we let ourselves down badly today. It would be easy to single out individuals but every player has to take responsibility for their part in that. The only positive to take out of today’s game was the performance of John Courtney. I am absolutely delighted he wanted to return to United and the threat he provided all afternoon was exciting considering how long he’s been out of the game due to injury.”

Team: Snaith, Hallam, Forman (Durdey), Mansell (McLening), Muirhead, Harris, Scutt, Courtney (Clarke), Rayner-Mistry, O’Loughlin and Crossley.

Man of Match: John Courtney.

On Saturday (September 27) United are back in league action with an away match at Nettleham . Kick off 3pm.
