Diligent Burgh put-down Vets

East Lincs Combination Division Four

Burgh Town 4 Alford Vets 1

Burgh Town recovered from a lack lustre first half display at Marsh Lane to clinch the three points after the break.

They huffed and puffed for 45 minutes and stand-in keeper Shaun Wathall had to come to their rescue on several occasions as Alford looked the more likely to break the deadlock in this fixture between third and fourth placed sides.

Alford’s prolific striker Victor twice went close and it was Burgh who were most relieved to hear the referee’s half time whistle.

The second half saw a different Burgh as they pressed the ball a lot higher up the pitch. They were rewarded almost immediately with a little help from a bumpy surface. The ball was played back to the Alford keeper and he miss-kicked completely as Town’s own prolific striker Jordan Houlston applied the pressure and tapped the ball into an empty net.

Burgh then doubled their lead as Wathall’s long clearance deceived the high Alford backline, allowing the speedy Josh Whittam to race onto the ball and produce a deft chip over the advancing keeper.

The black and red stripes of Burgh then moved through the gears, producing their best football of the match.

Their endeavours were rewarded with the third goal on 70 minutes.

Jamie Kilner started the move and involved Jason Scutt and Houlston before finding Whittam, whose good first touch gave him a yard of space to shoot home from 12 yards.

Charlie Carter then got his name on the scoresheet. A neat move involving second half sub Max Foreman, gave Carter the space to slot home from just inside the Alford area.

Richard Jackson tried to get in on the action as his first touch allowed him to dribble past four players before being tackled as he bore down on the Alford goal.

A lapse of concentration allowed Alford a consolation goal with virtually the last kick of the game.

Victor raced onto a through ball to slot past Wathall in the Burgh goal.
