After suffering a ‘crappy year’ Callum Johnson is focussing on adding another title to his CV.

The Boston light heavyweight has been ordered to face Russian Igor Mikhalkin for the vacant European title next year, a date yet to be set.

It appeared that 2019 was going to be one to remember for the 34-year-old following March’s vitory over Sean Monaghan in New York.

But injury has left him inactive ever since, Johnson having to turn down a world title fight against Dmitry Bivol in the process.

“I got off to a flying start, but it’s been a crappy year for me,” Johnson, who has won Comonwealth and British titles as a pro, told The Standard.

“I got injured at the wrong time, and that’s been the story of my career at times.

“But this is a chance to make 2020 my year. The European title is the second best one to have behind a world title.

“It could be a chance to get going again and put me in line for another world title shot, that’s still my dream.”

Johnson has won 18 of his pro bouts, his only defeat coming in the IBF world title fight against Artur Beterbiev, where he became the first professional to put the Russian on the canvas.

“I fancy myself to win it,” Johnson added.

“I fancy myself against anyone in there because I know how hard I can punch.

“He’s a good fighter, but I know what I’m capable of.

“I’m back in the gym and working hard to be the best fighter I can be.”
