EAST Lindsey District Council has launched a major new volunteering scheme whcih rewards people for giving up their time.
It has joined the Smartran Time Miles Scheme, which allows volunteers to earn points for every hour they record working on behalf of a charity or not for profit organisation.
Volunteers can then exchange their Time Miles for discounts at over 400 retailers, including Boots, Next, ITunes, JJB sports as well as some supermarket chains.
East Lindsey District Council currently has 548 volunteers registered on its Cultural Force database, which allows volunteers to be matched with the type of volunteering opportunities they are interested in.
Many of these volunteers will have the opportunity to support the East Lindsey Live and SO Festival programmes later in the year.
During SO Festival 2011 alone local people volunteered 3,500 hours of their time to support the programme of events in a range of roles – performers, support staff and technicians.
Initially, Time Miles will be piloted with a small number of volunteers, including events, before being rolled out to clubs, organisations and events across the District.
Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Adam Grist, explained: “As well as making a contribution to the local community volunteering provides a great way for people to develop new skills and meet new people.
“We are very proud to be the first council in Lincolnshire to join the scheme, which we hope will encourage more people to volunteer, whilst recognising those who already do.
“In 2012 there will be more volunteering opportunities than ever before with the East Lindsey Live Festival programme taking place District-wide between April and October and we’d be keen to hear from anyone who is interested in being involved in helping to organise and deliver the events.”
