UPDATE: The A16 is likely to remain closed between Ulceby Cross, near Alford, and Kenwick Top until “Thursday evening” after a hay lorry fire severely damaged the road surface, police have said.

Police earlier warned that the closure could last “for some time”, after the blaze this afternoon near Burwell caused heat damage to the road surface.

But they have now revealed that the road will likely be closed for well over 24 hours.

A police spokesperson said: “There is a hay lorry on fire on the A16 south of Burwell. Avoid the area if you can while fire attend and deal with it.

“Two fire appliances are on scene on the A16 and a specialist unit is coming from Lincoln. Please avoid the area and find a different route.

“The road is closed between Ulceby Cross and Kenwick Top due to road surface damage from the fire. Detours are being sorted.

“The A16 likely to be closed until tomorrow evening (Thursday) due to fire damage of the road surface,” they added.

Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue crews from Alford, Spilsby and Louth were scrambled to tackle the blaze.

The lorry was carrying 36 one tonne hay bales.

UPDATE: At 3.30pm today (Wednesday) police were reporting that the lorry was still alight.

A map of the diversion route has also now been published.
