Road casualty report comes in for criticism

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) has dismissed a report that states Boston and Skegness is among the UK’s worst areas for road casualty rates .

The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) and the Direct Line Group have published the 2015 Parliamentary Constituency Road Safety Dashboard and the Boston and Skegness area does not compare well.

It was ranked the worst in the country for the highest casualty rates as far as car occupants are concerned - 60 per cent higher than the national average.

However, LRSP insist the figures paint an inaccurate story.

John Siddle, communications manager for LRSP, said: “Our figures show the number of collisions is going down and the number of casualties is also going 

“Last year was a bad year for fatalities in Lincolsnhire, with 99, but figures are generally coming down.

“In 1999 there were 104 deaths on the roads but, apart from last year, they have come down to sub-50.

“Obviously even one death is one too many but I have seen nothing to back up the claims that were made in the 

David Davies, for PACTS, insisted the figures released were correct and that they showed ‘relative progress’ rather than ‘absolute progress’ compared to the national average for the past three years, compared to the previous three.

He said: “It does not mean things have got worse, it’s progress relative to national progress. Basically, progress in Boston and Skegness is not as fast as progress 

In the earlier press statements Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director personal lines at Direct Line, said: “We hope the Road Safety Dashboard will provide a catalyst for action aimed at reducing deaths and injury at a local level, as the diversity of results demonstrate 
there is a no ‘one size fits all’ solution.

“The Dashboard will become a vital tool in helping improve the safety of Britain’s Roads.”
