Around 100 teenagers took part in the annual Spring Harvest Festival at Butlins Holiday Centre, joining the Coastal Access for All (CAFA) group in a one-off sand clearance and beach clean-up on Tuesday, April. 15.

The organisers of the inter-denominational Christian Festival approached CAFA earlier this year and wanted to get involved in something to help the community. CAFA welcomed the idea and went about arranging the day with the help of equipment from Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve.

Paul Marshall of CAFA and Pastor Dave Middleton from the Storehouse Church, Skegness were present to welcome the youngsters.

Paul Marshall said: “when I entered one of the buildings in Butlins where the volunteers had gathered, I was amazed by the number of teenagers who were so enthusiastic about picking up rubbish on the beach and they gave us a wonderful welcome.”

After a short briefing, the volunteers collected the equipment and headed off to the beach. Some picked up shovels and cleared sand from the walkways around the back gate area, whilst others took their litter pickers and council supplied blue plastic bags and went about clearing the beach of litter.

On a sunny day, organisers said a joyful time was had, with teams of volunteers bursting into song at any time.

Security at the back gate were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the youngsters and holiday makers were all very appreciative of all the hard work being put in.

Over 20 large plastic bags of litter were collected, besides a number of containers washed ashore and pieces of metal and wood that were found.

CAFA wish to thank all the youngsters who took part and the participants from the Spring Harvest Festival for helping to arrange the day,

CAFA also thank Pastor Dave and the Storehouse Church for their sponsorship and support and for paving the way for the event to take place.

“When they said we could have anything up to 100 youngsters keen to get involved I didn’t expect to see a 100 volunteers. It was just amazing and a memorable day and hopefully we can do it all again next year.”
