Skegness student Lora Blackett has won the Rotary Club’s district-wide Young Chef competition.

Lora competed for the Skegness Rotary Club in the district round in the Grimbsy Institute after winning through to the district stages.

Skegness Rotary Club’s Margaret Taylor said: “It is with great pleasure that I am able to report that Lora Blackett has once again represented the Rotary club of Skegness in the Young Chef competition.

“Rotary Clubs believe it is very important to encourage and develop creativity in young people in the kitchen. Cooking amongst young people is a growing interest and a valuable life skill.

“Rotary clubs, in association with leading olive oil company Filippo Berio, have organised Young Chef competitions at club level in the autumn term. The winners then went forward to the district final at Grimsby.

“The competition goes from strength to strength each year producing some superb quality cooking from young people aged 11 to 17.

“Thousands of youngsters from all over Great Britain and Ireland enter the competition and through competition at club district and regional level become shortlisted down to eight competing in the national final.

“The contestants have to prepare and present a three-course healthy meal for two people fully costed and planned for under £15,” she added.

Lora won the district contest with sautéed chicken liver and cream cheese mousse served with soda bread farls and a rocket and beetroot salad.

Her meal also consisted of baked cod loin with a herby coriander crust served on a pea and bacon risotto with bacon crisps, followed by a light lime cheesecake on a crispy ginger nut base served with candid raspberry, lime and ginger.

The Runner up was Rachel Lawson from the Rotary Club of Lincoln Colonia.

Her menu was Mediterranean vegetable frittata with salad garnish, Paprika chicken hasselback potatoes glazed carrots broccoli florets, and pears poached in a stem ginger syrup with a stem ginger shortbread and Chantilly cream.

Both Lora and Rachel will now go forward to the regional final at the Charnwood Academy in Kirkby in Ashfield on Saturday, March 22.
