A couple who love taking short breaks in Skegness say they were shocked to discover their favorite hotel was closed when they called round to pay the balance to celebrate Christmas in the resort.
Carol Chambers had been unable to use the online bookings facility at the Sun Hotel on North Parade when she and her husband, Malcolm, decided to visit recently, so instead they stayed a few doors away at the Savoy Hotel.
Mrs Chambers, of Cleethorpes, said: “Imagine our shock when we called round to find just a note in the window which said: ‘The hotel is closed. Sorry for any inconvenience’.
“We paid £100 each on debit card as a deposit and other couples have lost out too. A lot of retired couples book in there and they can’t afford to lose out like this.”
June Howard, business manager for the Skegness East Coast and Wolds Hospitality Association (SECHWA) which sets a benchmark for visitors looking for reliable good quality accommodation, said she did not know why the hotel closed. She said: “We had heard rumours the owner had been ill but he was not a member so I am afraid I do not know.”
Mrs Chambers has now book Christmas at the Savoy Hotel. Tammy Hennett, reception manager at the Savoy, said: “We are sorry this has happened to visitors to Skegness.
“However, we are delighted that we have been able to put them up and we will make sure they have a good time.”
The Standard has attempted to contact the owners of the Sun Hotel without success.
