What started as an office romance has turned into a 50-year-long marriage for an Ingoldmells couple.
Ken and Liz Gibbons, of Oak Close, met in the early 1960s while working for the same merchant bank in London - Ken as a messenger and Liz in the accounts department.
“It wasn’t a very big company, so everybody knew one another,” said Ken, now aged 75.
“We got on famously from day one,” he added. “We both had the same interests. We both liked cinema, theatre and travel.”
The couple would go on to marry at Hackney Town Hall on July 24, 1965, with a honeymoon in Majorca following.
It means last Friday was their 50th - and golden - wedding anniversary.
“It wasn’t a big wedding, but it was most enjoyable,” said Liz, today aged 76.
The couple came to Lincolnshire at the end of the 1990, after living for a period in Essex.
Speaking of their 50 years of married life together, Ken said: “I don’t know where the time has gone, but it has gone.”
Liz said: “I feel very, very lucky because I have a very good husband. He is very considerate and very loving.”
She added: “It’s a lottery when you get married.”
Of the secret of a successful marriage, Ken said: “I’m not sure, you just get on together. You have your ups and downs and you just cope with it in the end.”
Liz added: “You have to want the same things; it’s absolutely essential. If one wants to do one thing, and the other doesn’t then you really need to discuss it and sort it out.”
Liz also spoke of the importance of compromise.
“In the first few years it’s all very nice and lovely, but as time goes by it’s essential you are able to compromise on things.”
The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a neighbour’s house with close ones joining them on the day.
