Skegness Coxswain Ray Chapman has been made a Member of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours.

He said he was ‘honoured and stunned’ when he opened the letter telling him his 44 years volunteering for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute had earned him the award for services to maritime safety.

He said: “I enjoy what I do so much. You are working as part of a team. if it wasn’t for the people you are there with I wouldn’t have done it for so long - it’s all about the camaraderie.

“You get a lot more out of it than you put in.”

Alan Fisher, Skegness Lifeboat operations manager, said: “When things get sticky out on the water, the other crew look up to him for inspiration because of the wealth of his knowledge.”
