CARAVAN sites owners are now being targeted as part of the ‘We’re prepared for coastal flooding – are you?’ campaign that aims to encourage local communities to make sure they have taken steps to prepare for flooding.

With the East Lindsey coast being home to almost 24,000 static caravans on 200 sites, emergency services are appealing for site owners to sign up to Floodline Warnings Direct and to make sure they have a flood evacuation plan in place.

Over the coming weeks the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum, supported by Lincolnshire County Council, East Lindsey District Council and the Environment Agency, will start to visit caravan sites to advise and support site owners and managers on how they can prepare for coastal flooding.

Former Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, Town Clerk, Jen Cooper, who has been appointed to lead the caravan site visits, will be making appointments to see site owners. Jen has previously supported Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea Town Council in developing a detailed Emergency and Flood Plan for the local community.

Jen said: “Meeting with site owners will be an important opportunity for us to re-enforce the message about the need to be prepared.

“We hope our work will result in more sites signing up to Floodline Warnings Direct and developing detailed flood plans.

Head of Emergency Planning at Lincolnshire County Council, David Powell, said: “Flood risk on the east coast is such as an important issue for Lincolnshire and we need the help of the whole community to ensure we’re best prepared.

“In doing so there is a balance to be met in terms of supporting the economy and tourism industry, which is so vitally important, and making sure we have robust plans.

“In a flood the community can’t solely rely on the emergency services to help them. Site operators and local people have a responsibility of their own to ensure they know what they would do if flooding does occur.”

“Alongside caravan site owners and managers, local people are being encouraged to sign up to Floodline Warnings Direct by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188, and to complete a flood plan for their household using the free template available from
