Some clever reorganisation of funds by town clerk Steve Larner has resulted in a ‘one-off’ plan to generate most of the £25,000 needed to pay for a contractor for this season.

Delaying the recruitment of an event co-ordinator and various repairs and reducing plant displays are some of the ways suggested to generate £20,561, with the rest hopefully coming from Lincolnshire County Council after talks on Monday.

If talks are unsuccessful, the council will look to its reserves to cover the shortfall.

There was an outcry at the January and February town council meetings over the impact to tourism if the county council pulled its amenity grass cutting budget, which would leave 153,840 square metres of grass verges on the approach to the resort uncut.

However, in spite of objections from across the county, Mr Larner told Wednesday’s meeting LCC’s executive board had approved pulling amenity grass cutting from its budget. He said: “We now have to look at our options.”

Coun Steve Kirk said he would like to see a street team reinstated by the town council to deal with grass cutting and litter. Coun Syd Dennis said: “We just need to get the job done. We have a duty to the residents and visitors alike. This has got to be put in place. Let’s get on with it.”
