A palliative care facility, created through years of community fundraising, has announced a number of positive developments as it continues preparations to admit patients.

The Butterfly Hospice has begun hosting training events and clinical forums as part of its ongoing work assisting people with life limiting illnesses and their families.

Chief executive Judi Byrne said: “For the coming year the Butterfly Hospice will continue to make progress and tackle the challenges to achieve our vision of access, quality and choice in palliative and end of life care for people in our area.”

The Boston based facility is now the weekly venue for the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), providing a forum for clinical staff to discuss the best care options for their patients with life limiting illnesses.

The hospice has also organised a series of fully-booked educational workshops for clinical professionals covering topics relevant to the palliative care and end of life health service.

Ms Byrne and her team of staff and volunteers also hope the first rate facility, situated in four acres of tranquil green space at the rear of Boston Pilgrim Hospital, will soon begin admitting patients.

The new hospice, built after more than a decade of community support, has been designed in consultation with patients, families, carers and the local community to best meet their needs.

But despite a continued need for palliative care facilities in this part of Lincolnshire and the community’s evident support for it, the Butterfly Hospice continues to wait for the outcome of its discussions with the NHS’

As the centre continues working towards that goal, Ms Bryne says the need for the community support remains as strong as ever.

She said: “2013 presents a great opportunity for people in the community to get involved and offer support to their local hospice.

“Every contribution and gesture of help will make an incredible difference to the provision of services everyone is working to provide.”
