Funeral open days aim to get people talking

To mark Dying Matters Awareness Week (12th to 18th May) Lincolnshire Co-operative funeral homes will open their doors and welcome visitors to a series of coffee mornings.

Dying Matters is a national organisation with the slogan ‘Let’s talk about it’.

Its main aim is to change people’s attitudes and behaviours towards death.

Members include NHS organisations, funeral directors, care providers and faith groups and during the awareness week, events will be held across the country.

By holding open days at its funeral homes, Lincolnshire Co-op aims to encourage people and their families to look around, have a cuppa and ask the team of highly trained staff any questions they may have.

It’s also a good opportunity to find out more about the range of services available from woodland burials to eco-coffins.

The theme of this year’s awareness week is ‘You only die once’ and people are encouraged to take five simple steps to make their end of life experience better, from telling family their wishes, to planning ahead with a funeral bond.

A funeral bond in particular offers peace of mind for both individuals and families by planning all of the details in advance, plus visitors can get 10x dividend on Lincolnshire Co-op funeral bonds during Dying Matters Awareness Week.

The Society’s Head of Funeral Services, David Dernley said It was important to support the Dying Matters initiative so people feel more comfortable talking about their wishes.

“Dying is a tough subject to discuss, but without talking openly about it, it is difficult for our loved ones to know what we want,” he said.

“By giving people the chance to come into the funeral home and have a cuppa and an informal chat with our staff, we hope they will be encouraged to ask questions and find out about the different options available to them, such as planning ahead with a funeral bond. This is turn may encourage people to talk to their loved ones about their wishes,” he added.
