THE Save Our Pools campaign - spearheaded by the Skegness Standard - has triumphed with the opening of the Fairy Dell a week ahead of schedule.
East Lindsey District Council promised the much loved paddling pool on Skegness' southern foreshore would open at May bank holiday, but it opened to the public on Monday.
Bob Suich, team leader (resorts) at ELDC, said: "I'm very proud of the work that's been done here.
"It shows how people in Skegness are so proud of what they have got because they contacted us and told us this is what they wanted.
"We are proud of them for standing up and saying what they wanted because they realise what a great resort Skegness is."
The Fairy Dell was closed in September 2004 because of concerns over its water quality.
The Standard started the Save Our Pools campaign and angry residents, holidaymakers and councillors rallied with us to make sure the Fairy Dell was not lost forever. Last April ELDC gave in to the pressure.
The district council carried out extensive consultation within the community, and people were given their say on how they wanted the pool to be restored.
The refurbished pool has retained its famous fountain, now gleaming in the middle of the restored pools and new rubber paving.
Several smaller water features are dotted throughout the pools.
It has a water plant room which cleans and chlorinates the water every 20-30 minutes.
Someone will be employed to ensure there is a council presence at the pool to protect it from vandals and ensure people are playing safely.
John Emerson, ELDC service manager (technical), who headed the project said: "It's gone very well and we have stayed within budget.
"Now we just need some good weather and lots of kids."
