School celebrates refurb work

MAJOR refurbishment work on buildings at Wainfleet Magdalen Church of England/Methodist School was officially unveiled recently.

Work has included the replacement of a two-storey block with a new single-storey building, replacement of all heating and hot water pipe work and electrical services.

The county council-funded £2.3m scheme has also included relocating the children’s centre and youth centre originally within the building to more appropriate areas.

Peter Beveridge, headteacher, said: “We are all pleased with the improvements which have made a major difference to the school. I am very grateful for the way the pupils, parents and staff have accepted the difficulties during the building work and we now realise it was all worthwhile. The school is now in a wonderful position to improve further to provide a first class education for the children in the area.”

Coun Patricia Bradwell, Executive Councillor for Children’s Services, added: “We are delighted to see this substantial scheme come to fruition. It will provide impressive new accommodation for the school. Staff and pupils will benefit from the improved buildings and modern space.”

Coun Neil Cooper, Chairman of the county council and local ward member for Wainfleet and Burgh, added: “Even in these difficult financial times, the county council is still committed to investing in children and young people where we can. Although the works have caused some disruption to the school it has been worthwhile and staff and children will now be able to reap the benefits.”

A reunion inviting past pupils is also set to take place on Saturday, April 28 from 7pm to 1am at the Coronation Hall in Wainfleet. All former pupils and their guests of the Magdalen Secondary School from the 1960s to 1987 when it closed and became a primary are invited

“There will be a disco, bar, food, a live band and a great chance to catch up with friends old and meet new ones too,” said a spokesperson.

Tickets cost £5 in advance from Sue Wilson on 01754 820282 or Gail Epton Grant on 01754 763549.
