East Lindsey District Council’s Executive Board has today (Tuesday, January 13) supported a proposal to look in detail at sharing the Council’s community safety function with Boston Borough Council.
They will consider investing up to £425,000 to update the CCTV cameras throughout the District and install a wireless infrastructure to transmit images.
Under the proposals, whilst still being based in their respective District, Community Safety Teams would have the remit and ability to support one another across borders.
Both Councils will also look at sharing Boston’s CCTV Monitoring facility, which has recently undergone a major upgrade and is one of the most advanced in the country.
Both Councils already work closely together through the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership and this would be an extension of that existing arrangement.
Portfolio Holder for Communities, Councillor Sandra Harrison, said: “Both Councils already work very closely together on issues around community safety and from a Policing perspective both Districts are already covered by the same operational Police Commander.
“In considering the proposals, particularly around CCTV where we have a partnership with a number of Towns and Parishes, we’ve been clear that any upgrade required to cameras and wireless technology would be paid for by the District Council. Since the Council installed its CCTV suite in 2006 at Skegness Police Station technology has moved on significantly and the investment we’re considering would ensure CCTV in East Lindsey is some of the most resilient and effective anywhere.
“As well as making the CCTV service more resilient, and improving the quality of the CCTV system that services the residents of East Lindsey, this could enable the Council to make considerable savings on annual running costs.”
The Executive Board will next consider the matter in March.
