Police have denied allowing cyclists to flout the rules of the road in Skegness following criticism from a town councillor.

Coun Gary Ellis claims to have has seen officers ignoring cyclists infringing traffic regulations.

He said: “Many times cyclists have cut across me this winter with no lights on their bike and wearing dark clothing, plus with earphones on. I have seen police cars pass cyclists with all the above and no action taken. Safety on the road by all users should be equally enforced.”

However, Inspector Andy Morrice denied officers were going easy on cyclists and offences were being dealt with. He said: “Anti social behaviour, burglary, protecting vulnerable people and violence against persons are the priority. We are not going to take staff off those things to deal with cyclists.”
