A BUSY street in the centre of Skegness was cordoned off this morning after a man threatened to throw himself off a building in the heart of the tourist area.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 9am when witnesses saw the man clamber onto the balcony of a flat in South Parade.

Witnesses said he initially climbed over the railings one-and-a-half storeys above the ground, although he had retunred to the correct side of the railings by the time the emergency services arrived.

A crowd of concerned passers-by and tourists swiftly gathered at the site as police negotiators talked the man down.

He was eventually brought back inside the building shortly before 11am, where he was detained under the mental health act.

The man has not been named by police but they have described him as a 23-year-old local. They added that he had been seen trying to harm himself with a blunt piece of wood during the incident. South Parade was cordoned off during the incident.
