Mum-to-be admits shoplifting

AN EXPECTANT mum stole two pairs of boxer shorts from a Skegness shop but threw then away when she set off the security alarms in the shop.

Lauren Simone Cooper ,24, of Richmond Drive, Skegness admitted stealing the boxer shorts from Sports Direct in Lumley Road on May 11 when she appeared at the town’s Magistrates’ Court last week.

Prosecuting, Marie Stace said that at about 4.30pm, Cooper took the shorts from a display and put them at the rear of a pushchair and then left the store without paying for them.

She was followed to an address where she was arrested.

She then admitted that she had stolen the shorts to buy drugs but had panicked when the security tags on the shorts set the store’s alarm off, and she threw the shorts away.

She went with officers to try and find the shorts, the court was told, but they couldn’t be found.

The boxer shorts were valued at £10 each,

Mitigating, Mark Hudson said Cooper had had problems with drugs and now voluntarily attended Addaction.

He said she was just four weeks away from giving birth.

She was anxious to keep the baby and was being closely monitored by the medical services and Social Services.

Magistrates sentenced her to a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £85 in prosecution costs and to pay £20 in compensation to Sports Direct.
