A Horncastle man’s Christmas Day was marked by
being caught in possession of cannabis.

Matthew Miller, 48, was stopped in the town by police who spotted a defective headlight on the Citroen Saxo he was driving.

Officers noted a “strong smell” of cannabis coming from the vehicle, magistrates in Boston were told last Wednesday (April 28).

“A search was conducted and a rucksack found with three large bags of cannabis, with approximately one ounce in each,” said prosecutor Jim Clare.

Phillipa Chatterton, mitigating, said her client accepted it was a relatively large amount but he used it to ease severe arthritis and didn’t like frequenting drug dealers often.

“He doesn’t want to risk going before the court again so he’s stopped using it altogether,” she added.

Miller, of West Street, pleaded guilty to possession of a class B drug and having a defective headlight.

For the drug offence he was fined £80.

Miller was also ordered to pay £105 costs and £34 victim surcharge.

The court ordered that there was no separate penalty for the headlight matter.
