A charity car wash in Skegness has raised more than £3,000 for cancer care, smashing the target set by its organiser.
Richard Harrison, 40, of Diamond Shine Mobile Car Valeting, held the fundraiser at The Vine Hotel, in Skegness, last Saturday, in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The former member of Skegness’ Royal National Lifeboat Institution and coast guard had hoped to bring in £1,000 for the cause from the event.
However, backed by a raffle, it raised a total of £3,077.
“It went a lot better than I expected,” Richard said.
A large team of volunteers helped Richard on the day, who was inspired to launch the fundraiser after seeing how Macmillan supported a friend and their family through a battle with leukaemia.
Richard said the group managed to wash somewhere between 75 and 100 cars, with a minimum donation of £5 requested. He said in addition to the raffle, a number of cash donations helped them towards their final sum.
“I’m overwhelmed by everybody’s response to it,” he said of how well the event was supported. “It’s just unbelievable.”
