Tourism leaders along the coast expect 2013 to be a ‘wonderful year’ after 60,000 visitor guides were produced in the most concerted promotional effort to date.

The 2013 Visitor Guide for Skegness, Mablethorpe and the Lincolnshire Wolds was officially launched today at the Village, Church Farm amid an atmosphere of hope and positivity for the coming year.

The 55-page guide has been produced in partnership between Skegness East Coast and Wolds Hospitality Association and East Lindsey District Council, with the support of other key local organisations.

SECHWA chairman George Facey said the guide was a great success, which would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of all involved.

He said: “It just goes to show that by working together with the local council and district council we can pull things together for the good of everyone.

“Five or six years ago this would never have happened - it was always us and them - but now we are working together and delivering things that are good for the local economy and good for tourism and it gives me great pleasure to see so many of you supporting what we are trying to do.”

This year, with the support of East Lincolnshire Destination Management Organisation, the guide will be promoted with a national advertising campaign targeting visitors from areas outside Lincolnshire’s traditional catchment area, with images of the region’s stunning landscapes appearing on buses all over the West Midlands.

Guide committee chairman Nigel Tett hoped this would open up a whole new market and ensure a great 2013.

He said: “With improvements to roads heading east to west, we have the chance to capture some of the 12 million strong population, which lives between Northampton, Nuneaton, Birmingham Wolverhampton and the Potteries.”

Coun Dick Edginton, standing in for the Mayor of Skegness, expressed his enthusiasm for the project and its role as a part of escalating promotional efforts, which has helped extend the region’s tourism season beyond the limited summer period he knew during his boyhood in Skegness.

He said: “The tourism industry within Skegness cannot be over estimated, it’s the lifeblood of this town.

“I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve seen so many changes - when I was in my teens the season went from Easter to September and then it went totally dead - thankfully due to the efforts of everyone in the industry that’s no longer the case.”

ELDC’s leader Coun Doreen Stephenson was presented with the first of 60,000 glossy guides by the Ugly Sisters from the Embassy Theatre’s pantomime production of Cinderella, who made an unexpected and boisterously theatrical entrance to this afternoon’s launch event.

Opening the surprise package, Coun Stephenson said: “I am absolutely delighted to be the first one to share with you the brochure for 2013.

“This is the result of the work that has gone on in the past few months with East Lindsey District Council staff together with SECHWA and yourselves as businesses to make sure that we actually sell Skegness, Mablethorpe and our wonderful coast.”
