Yellowbellies can treat themselves and treat their heart with the latest addition to Lincolnshire Co-op’s Love Local range, a rapeseed oil with half the saturated fat of olive oil.
Ownsworth’s Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil is made by farmer Andrew Ownsworth on his family farm near Grantham, and he’s keen to shout about everything that makes it special: “It’s cold pressed and that means that you’re getting the best out of the oil, so it’s much richer and thicker. It’s a very straightforward process,” he said. “There are no chemicals added so it’s pure, and everything is traceable right back to me. I can take you to the field it was grown in.”
Andrew started farming with wife Ronnie over a decade ago and these days the business is very much a family affair, with sons Tom and Jim helping out around the farm.
The oilseed rape is grown alongside wheat for bread and barley for malting, then harvested, pressed and bottled on site.
Now, 250ml bottles of the rapeseed oil are being stocked in all of Lincolnshire Co-op’s 82 food stores as part of the Society’s popular Love Local range. The range includes a variety of goods from all over the trading area, from beer to beef and from cheese to cider.
“Rapeseed oil is very versatile,” Andrew says, “It can cook at very high temperatures without burning so it’s perfect for roasting, but it also makes an excellent salad dressing, and you can even bake with it.
“Instead of having five oils in your cupboard you only need one!”
Supply Chain Manager for Lincolnshire Co-op Nicola Berry said customers would love the new local product hitting the shelves. She added: “It’s a great way to try a healthier cooking style, and support local producers at the same time.”
