HOUSING benefit recipients living in housing association rented accommodation have been warned they may receive less money following government changes to the welfare system.
From April 2013 those receiving housing benefits with spare bedrooms in their home will see their payments reduced and be asked to make up the shortfall themselves.
East Lindsey District Council’s portfolio holder for housing Coun William Gray said: “The changes being introduced by the government will have an impact on people living in East Lindsey and we need to ensure they are aware and are best prepared.
“Money is already tight for many families and we need people who think they could lose some money through the new scheme to start thinking about how they will make up the shortfall.”
Housing benefits for those with one spare bedroom will reduced by 14 per cent and those with two or more additional bedrooms will see theirs reduced by a quarter.
Tenants likely to see their benefits reduced are advised to consider transferring to a smaller home, taking up a lodger, or looking for additional work.
