At today’s (Tuesday, January 13) Executive Board meeting, it was agreed to accept a surrender of the lease of Wainfleet Road Memorial Playing Fields from Skegness Sports Association (SSA).

This has led to the granting of two new leases to SSA and Skegness Town Football Club (STFC).

he Playing Fields will be split into two sections with one being leased to SSA on a 25 year lease for a rent of £1 per annum to include an area of open playing fields for use by the general public.

The remainder of the site will be leased to STFC at a cost of £125 per year for 125 years.

As part of the agreement, in lieu of any financial consideration, developer Quora Ltd will fund major improvements at the two sites, including additional car parking, a full sized football pitch, two full sized ruby pitches, an all-weather ‘3G’ multi-purpose sports pitch, and fencing for SSA.

New football facilities including two full sized floodlit football pitches, dug outs, club room, stadium with turnstile access and fencing will be constructed for STFC.

The developer will also pay to the Council a one-off premium of £112,000 to secure the 125 year lease to STFC.

All works would be subject to the developments securing planning permission. The £1.64m project will create a ‘sporting hub’ serving the people of Skegness, Wainfleet and surrounding areas.

The improvements will enable STFC to gain National League Standard 5, enabling it to progress beyond the league it has been promoted to.

Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Leisure and Sport, Councillor Adam Grist, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity Skegness and the surrounding area.

It will allow more people to access first-class sports facilities on their own doorstep and provide a boost to local sporting teams – in particular football and rugby.”

Both SSA and STFC will be responsible for the maintenance, repairs and insuring of their respective sites.
