One-off Evora commemorates 007’s submarine Esprit S1

Anniversaries have long been a source of inspiration for the motor industry. Some are more obscure than others.

2017 is the 40th anniversary of the launch of the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, in which Roger ‘Eyebrow’ Moore took on a crew of scuba-suited baddies in his submersible Lotus Esprit S1. You have to admire Q for knowing there would be an occasion to drive underwater on that mission. Well worth the expensive conversion work involved.

Anyway, like every Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me was good old-fashioned fun and Lotus has decided to mark that by commissioning its in-house personalisation department Lotus Exclusive to build a one-off Evora Sport 410 for a customer.

Lotus hasn’t told us how much they’ll be paying for it, but it’s safe to say that it won’t be lower than the standard Evora’s £82,000 price. For whatever it is they’ll be getting the 416bhp V6 engine from the Evora Sport 410, which gives the car a 0-60mph time of four seconds and a top speed of 190mph, a colour-coded bumper with a white one-piece carbon-fibre tailgate, a bespoke Evora B-pillar badge in the original Esprit font, and red and black tartan cloth trim on the seat panels and door cards with red contrast stitching on the dashboard and centre console.

No mention is made as to whether any of these materials are waterproof in the event of an owner going in for some underwater henchman-despatching. We’re not sure if the price includes the original car’s R-reg number plate either.

“So many of us recall the impact of the Lotus Esprit when it hit the big screen in The Spy Who Loved Me,” said Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales. “We wanted to honour that with a special Evora Sport 410.

“It’s the perfect tribute to such an influential Lotus, but a world away in terms of its abilities and performance.”
