Celebrating all things Volkswagen

Every year the Wörthersee Treffen is held to showcase the Volkswagen Group and its cars. Time was when this was just a small almost family event, but now many thousands descend on the shores of the Wörther See lake near Reifnitz. (The ‘Treffen’ part just means ‘meet’.) And, time was when VW would bring in other cars from the group, like from Audi or Skoda, but now it’s become a resolutely VW event.

With the GTI moniker being almost synonymous with VW and the Golf, VW chose the event to showcase the forthcoming Up GTI – which is actually more powerful and heavier than the original Golf GTI.

While the crowds loved the new city car, the show is more about what the visitors turn up in than what the organisers want them to look at. And, with 33 million examples made worldwide, it’s the Golf that takes centre stage at these events.

The thousands who flocked to this annual Austrian pilgrimage brought with them Golfs old and new, trick and tricky, rare and delightfully common. There were some amazing cars, where the show cars were upstaged by owners’ cars. Here’s a few we spotted.
