'Show must go on': Theatre launches appeal as jobs go

A theatre in Skegness has launched a survival appeal after being forced to cancel all of this year's productions, including the Christmas pantomime.

The Embassy Centre says in spite of continued support from East Lindsey District Council and Magna Vitae, social distancing restrictions allowing as few as 100 people in the audience mean it would be impossible to open and cover costs.

Regrettably, some members of staff are already facing redundancy, which theatre manager Polly-Anne Trapmore-Shaw explains is necessary to ensure the future of the 'jewel in the crown of Skegness seafront'.

However, the loyalty shown by 60 per cent of 2020 ticket buyers, who have transferred to the rescheduled event in 2021, has underlined the commitment the Embassy needed to press on with a recovery plan.

"Since we closed on March 23 our income has completely dried up," said Polly-Anne, while launching the appeal on Youtube. "We cut costs and have taken advantage of every government scheme available, but when public money only makes up five percent of your £1.3million annual turnover, it's really hard to make up the rest of the 95 percent.

"It has been devastating - not only financially but for our future ambitions to bring you a diverse programme."

Poly-Anne said they had spent weeks and months' exploring all possibilities, but now the Embassy has been forced to start redundancy consultations in the hope they can save some jobs.

"We hope if we start now we have a better chance of survival because we have to protect the future of our theatre," she said.

"We have managed to book the majority of our touring shows into 2021 and that is thanks to you - our loyal audience - who have agreed to join us again and I can't express how thankful we are for this.

"You have thrown us a lifeline and shown us the commitment we needed to continue making plans to return.

"The live entertainment industry globally is relying on you to make its comeback."

The first show for 2021 is Footloose the Musical on February 16. Giovanni Pernice has also announced his Strictly Showman tour - This Is Me - which includes the Embassy on April 30.

Poly-Anne added the next few weeks and months are crucial and they will be exploring other re-opening options until social distancing measures are lifted.

"We have an important role to play in the recovery of Skegness. Please support us with whatever you can afford."

To support the appeal, text SAVEMYSEAT to 70085 to give £20 (texts cost standard rate message).
