Unbeaten century sinks Skeg for third league loss

ECB Lincolnshire Premier League

Skegness 213 for 8

Grimsby Town 217 for 1

SKEGNESS slipped to their third defeat of the season after their opponents’ skipper hit an unbeaten century at Richmond Drive.

The seasiders did get off to a good start, but their batting petered out.

In response, the visitors knocked off the required runs with 12 balls to spare.

Sean Chamberlain stepped up to skipper the side in the absence of Richie Hewitt and having won the toss, decided to bat.

His decision looked sound when Saeed Bariwala (50) and Ricky Lovelace (45) put on 76 for the first wicket.

Pete Houghton and Jamie Epton both played themselves in and then failed to go on to make the innings required to put Grimsby under pressure.

Epton was the first victim of Joel Hamilton, who ripped through the middle order to prevent the seasiders building a mountain for the visitors to climb.

Indeed, they fell 12 runs short of the total required for maximum batting points, despite some late resistance from Aussie Sean Williams.

Grimsby have been in form with the bat this season and so 213 didn’t feel enough and so it proved.

Skegness just didn’t have the fire power to halt the visitors’ charge.

After the loss of Jack Wilson for 53, Grimsby were in no mood to allow the home side to apply any pressure and Morgan (116 not out) and Harry Warwick (41 not out) saw them home.

Skegness will hope to bounce back when they travel to Bourne on Saturday.
