Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League
Skegness Town 3 Lincoln United Reserves 1
The Lilywhites got back to winning ways with a workmanlike performance against Supplementary Cup finalists Lincoln United Reserves at Burgh Road.
With John Courtney and Joby Gowshall returning to the squad, along with Daniel Reid leading the line in attack, Town looked a much more formidable force.
And three minutes into the game Liam Papworth fired the seasiders in front.
This settled the home side, after their defeats at Sleaford and Ruston Sports, and Papworth missed two golden opportunities to increase the lead. But United drew level after 29 minutes when Simon Mowbray profited from Jamie Epton’s failure to clear and fired past Jamie Sleight in the home goal.
The equaliser boosted the visitors, who enjoyed their best spell of the half in its wake. And they felt aggrieved by the way they fell behind four minutes before half-time.
An attempt to set up a Lincoln attack ricocheted against a blocking James Bland and fell kindly into the path of Courtney. With the visitors appealing for offside Courtney ran on to rifle past Patrick Shaw in the Lincoln goal.
United began the second half the stronger of the two sides and the seasiders were penned back in their own half, but, with Jake Akers and Gowshall in defiant mood, they soaked up the pressure and responded with a number of raids on the Lincoln goal.
The closest they came to extending their lead was after 80 minutes when Papworth danced his way past two defenders, cut inside from the left and stung Shaw’s fingers with a rasping shot.
At the other end Sleight was rarely troubled as United struggled to break down the home defence. But just when the tide appeared to be turning the visitors’ way Bland popped up to ruin their chances of a point. He cut in from the right and netted his fourth senior goal of the season.
You sensed the relief around the ground as Town finally got back to winning ways while beginning to make inroads into their backlog of fixtures.
