Skegness end season in third place
Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League
Skegness 242 for 9
Market Deeping 191 for 9
Skegness (16 pts) winning draw with Market Deeping (10pts)
SKEGNESS completed their rain-affected ECB season with a 16-point winning draw at sun-soaked Richmond Drive.
It was their first draw of the season and it helped them secure third place in the league table.
Highlights included a half century from Adrian Gordon, who followed this up with four wickets; and a cameo innings from Steve Kirkham, who hit 29 from 19 balls, including three fours and a six.
The seasiders decided to bat after winning the toss and Sean Chamberlain was chosen to open the innings with Pete Houghton.
He departed with the score on 21, although most of those runs were as a result of wides bowled by the visiting bowlers.
Kiwi Oliver Pringle then hit 21 from 17 balls to take the score to 50 before he perished caught behind.
Houghton and skipper Saeed Bariwala put on 40 before the opener gifted Jamie Morgan a simple caught and bowled. Bariwala also got himself into a position to make a big score when he was caught.
This brought together Paul Butler and Adrian Gordon, who put on 41 before Butler nicked one to the wicket keeper Josh Bowers off Nick Andrews.
Gordon went on to make 53 with some huge hits, but the wickets of Tony Santini and David Jacobs made you wonder whether the seasiders would be able to bat out their 50 overs.
That was the cue for Kirkham to make an impact. Backed up by Marcello Santini, he seemed to relish the responsibility of securing Skegness their fifth batting point.
Andrews was the pick of the Deeping bowlers. He finished with four wickets from his 17 overs.
Chasing 242, Deeping lost an early wicket when John McDougall nicked the ball to Bariwala off Pringle, but Josh Bowers and Richard Witt got them back on track with a partnership of 82.
Deeping skipper David Gillett and Tom Atallah put on 61 for the sixth wicket, but after that they were hanging on for a draw to prevent Skegness securing a maximum 20-point haul.
The ten points picked up by the visitors was enough to clinch 11th place to give them a chance of avoiding relegation.
