Seconds toast title triumph

SKEGNESS Cricket Club is celebrating the news that its second team has won the south Lincs and border league division two championship.

The seasiders have had a nervous two-week wait since completing their fixtures, but Stamford seconds failed to overcome their points tally when they were beaten by Sleaford Sunday.

Sleaford won by eight wickets, thanks to an unbeaten half century and three wickets from David Bowden.

Captain of the seconds Alistair Ainsworth was full of praise for his players after hearing the result from Sleaford.

He said: “It’s a fantastic achievement and just reward for the hard work and commitment the squad has given all season.

“I’m proud of everyone who played for the second XI this year, and I’m looking forward to the challenge division one will bring next season”.

The success follows hot-on-the-heels of news that the club’s first team are on the verge of a reprieve from relegation.

There had been fears that the firsts would have to drop into the Lincolnshire premier league after finishing second to bottom in the ECB premier league, but the relevant officials are said to be unconvinced that Billingborough meet the necessary criteria to replace Skegness at this level.

The final decision will be made at the annual general meeting, but sources at Skegness suggest the club is confident of avoiding the drop, following comments made at the committee meeting last week.
