Skegness win in ill-disciplined display
Skegness 1st XV 15 Long Eaton 1st XV 7
SKEGNESS seemed to want to lose the game as they continually gave away needless penalties in promising positions on the pitch.
Three yellow cards in the first half, from the home side compounded the situation and Skegness needed to survive for five minutes with 13 men on the pitch.
Halliday managed to take three points from the half which amazingly was enough to end the first 40 minutes with the lead.
Skegness lost the lead early on in the second half, when the flanker intercepted a long pass from the Skegness fly half to run unchallenged down the field. The Long Eaton fly half took over to finish off the move and he converted his own kick to make the score 3-7.
Skegness took the lead through a try from Cummings as Scupham saw the weakness and ran blind. He found Taylor who then found the flanker to score the try. Halliday could not convert as Skegness attempted to protect an 8-7 lead.
Brian scored from a bullocking run through the heart of the defence to crash over after persistent pressure from the home team’s pack led by Dean. Skegness now had a 15-7 lead after Halliday converted.
The blue and whites survived a number of kicks at goal after more indiscipline and negative play. The final whistle could not come soon enough as the home side denied the travelling team a valiant bonus point.
The new flood lights at the Skegness ground will be officially opened today (Wednesday) when a select Lincoln team visit Skegness. There will also be a juniors match prior to the seniors game.
